When an someone in the airport catches me reading a Nancy Drew book the expressions on their faces are rather amusing. Yes, I'm 25 years old. Yes, the typical age of reader for this book is 9. But do I look like I care? Clearly I am still reading the book. And yes, it would be safe to assume that this is more than my third time to do so. I will admit that the sentences can be somewhat cheesy, and the plot is never too complicated, and yes I usually can guess the ending before I even reach the final chapter... but that doesn't make me enjoy the book any less. Books should take us to a different place, whatever it may be, and I for one have never felt that the plot must be explicit, complicated, or climactic to do so. Books that I tend to like the most leave me feeling bright, imaginative, happy, and satisfied. You will not find me reading a tear-jerker (sorry Nicholas Sparks) or a war novel, and not something about angry or depressed people. Some might say that is narrow minded but I disagree. I have tried those types of books and I just don't like them. I end it feeling depressed or fired-up and simply wondering what the point of reading it was. Now there is one genre in which this does not hold true, and that is non-fiction. While novels, I feel, should leave us feeling uplifted, non-fiction should leave us holding more knowledge than we started out with, and sometimes this means hearing things that aren't exactly beautiful and true. That is the world in which we live. I say all of this so that you will understand the pattern of my reading choices and better relate to my comments in future posts.
Thank you for tuning in. Before I write about the books I am currently reading I am going to post about the ones I have read over the past year and how they have contributed to my current viewpoints as well as the other books on my "to read" list.
I'd love to hear what your favorite novels are! Have you ever found yourself sneaking around to read your favorite childhood book so that you could avoid the awkward stares?
